About this position
Queensland University of Technology (QUT) is offering a PhD scholarship on the system-level impact of healthcare AI in Brisbane, Australia.
The project focuses on how health AI tools, including AI scribes and other clinical decision support technologies, affect the full care process rather than only isolated tasks. Using human factors and systems approaches, the research will examine workflow, information flow, downstream effects on clinicians and patients, safety, and sustainable integration of AI in health services.
The scholarship provides a $38,310 per annum stipend for up to 3.5 years and includes a tuition fee offset/sponsorship for the first four full-time equivalent years of doctoral study.
Eligibility includes QUT PhD entry requirements, English language requirements, full-time internal enrolment, and an honours degree or research master’s degree in a health-related or related field such as nursing, medicine, allied health, pharmacy, public health, health information management, digital health, health informatics, or psychology. Experience or interest in human factors, user-centred design, digital health, or health services research is expected; qualitative or mixed methods experience is desirable.
Supervision is by Professor Amina Tariq and Professor Belinda Lange, and the successful candidate will join the NHMRC Centre of Research Excellence in Human Factors and AI-enabled Clinical Decision Support.

What's required
Applicants must meet QUT Doctor of Philosophy entry requirements, including English language requirements. They must enrol as a full-time, internal student and hold an honours degree (First Class or Second Class Upper) or a master degree with a substantial research component in a health discipline (such as nursing, medicine, allied health, pharmacy, public health or health information management) or a related field (such as digital health, health informatics or psychology) with demonstrated experience in health settings. Demonstrated interest or experience in human factors, user-centred design, digital health or health services research is required. Experience with qualitative or mixed methods or clinical/health service environments is desirable.
