About this position
PhD scholarship at Aarhus University, Department of Political Science, on social acceleration and democratic lawmaking.
The position is part of the ERC-funded SLOMODEMO project (High Speed Society, Slow Motion Democracy, and the Dilemma for Democratic Problem Solving) led by Professor Kees van Kersbergen. The project examines how liberal democracies respond when technological change, social change, and everyday life accelerate while democratic procedures remain deliberative and comparatively slow.
The PhD candidate will join the SLOMODEMO research group and contribute to work package WP2 / project 2.2, focusing on the impact of social acceleration on democratic lawmaking. The post invites applicants to design an original, focused, and comparative PhD project within this framework.
Relevant research areas and methods include political science, comparative politics, legislative politics, public policy, social acceleration, computational social science, longitudinal quantitative analysis, automated data collection, surveys, experiments, and computational text analysis of legislative and legal documents.
Applicants must hold a relevant master’s degree before enrolment and should have a strong foundation in quantitative social-science research design, comparative political analysis, proficiency in R or a comparable programming environment, reproducible data analysis skills, and excellent English. Experience with advanced quantitative methods, measurement of political concepts over time, multilingual document analysis, and open-science practices is an advantage.
The position is full-time, fixed-term, and runs from 1 February 2027 to 31 January 2030. It is a 3-year PhD programme with employment as a PhD fellow under Danish academic employment rules and collective agreement terms.
Deadline: 16 November 2026 at 23:59 CET.
