About this position

PhD scholarship in Soft Robotic Applications at DTU Electro, Technical University of Denmark

This PhD opportunity focuses on soft robotics, robotics, mechatronics, control engineering, mechanical design, dynamic modelling, and experimental validation of adaptive robotic systems. The project is part of RESSORT, a European research project on soft and adaptive robotics that integrates innovative materials, compliant structures, sensing, and intelligent control.

The research aims to develop and validate novel robotic technologies with compliant mechanisms and variable-stiffness mechanisms that can safely and effectively interact with uncertain environments. The work will include design, modelling, and control of robotic systems, with particular attention to mechanical adaptability, operational stability, and performance. Experimental validation will be carried out on robotic platforms, including adaptive and morphing aerial systems.

Typical tasks include developing compliant and variable-stiffness mechanisms, building mathematical and dynamic models, investigating control strategies, integrating actuators, sensors, and embedded control systems, and testing the technologies through simulations and real-world experiments. Collaboration with international research and industrial partners is also part of the role.

Eligibility highlights: a two-year master's degree (120 ECTS) or equivalent is required. The department especially seeks candidates with a strong background in mechatronics, robotics, mechanical engineering, control engineering, or a closely related field. Experience with CAD, actuators, embedded systems, prototyping, MATLAB/Simulink, C++, and/or Python is an advantage. Familiarity with soft robotics, compliant mechanisms, variable-stiffness systems, or aerial robotics is beneficial.

Funding and terms: the position is a 3-year full-time PhD scholarship with salary terms according to the Danish collective agreement. Academic approval and enrolment in a DTU PhD programme are required.

Location: Kgs. Lyngby, Denmark.

Deadline: 5 November 2026, 23:59 Danish time.

How to apply: submit one online application PDF in English via the DTU portal. Include a motivation letter, CV, transcripts, BSc/MSc diploma, and a one-page description of relevant technical or research projects.
