About this position

Edith Cowan University (Perth, Australia) is advertising a PhD scholarship within the ARC Industrial Transformation Research Hub for Critical Energy Separation Materials (ARC CREST).

The project focuses on solvent-based direct lithium extraction (DLE) and the coupling of downstream DLE with α-spodumene processing / direct alkaline digestion of spodumene. The research aims to improve lithium recovery and purification, understand the effects of feedstock properties and impurities, and integrate the steps into an efficient flowsheet.

This is a multidisciplinary opportunity spanning chemical engineering, materials science, chemistry, hydrometallurgy, solvent extraction, mineral processing, materials characterisation, and process optimisation.

Eligibility highlights: applicants must meet ECU PhD entry requirements and hold a Master by Research in chemical engineering, metallurgical/extractive metallurgy, chemistry, materials science, or a closely related discipline. Experience in hydrometallurgy, solvent extraction, mineral processing, chemical experimentation, materials characterisation, data analysis, and process optimisation is desirable.

The scholarship is for up to three years, subject to satisfactory academic progress and continued eligibility. The post does not specify a stipend amount. Applications open on 14-08-2026 and close on 31-08-2026.

To apply, send a CV and brief cover letter addressing the selection criteria to Nima Fakhralmobasheri at [email protected].
