About this position
PhD Scholarship Opportunity: Timber Portal Frames at the University of Waikato, in partnership with Red Stag TimberLab.
This industry-supported PhD project focuses on the behaviour and design of timber portal frame systems for industrial applications in New Zealand. The research will examine knee connection performance, load transfer mechanisms, stiffness, strength, and failure modes, with particular attention to cross-laminated timber (CLT), glulam, and steel components where appropriate. The project combines analytical, finite element, and experimental approaches to develop validated models and practical design solutions for industry.
Funding: Up to $30,000 per year for up to 36 months, plus domestic tuition fees and the Student Services Fee.
Eligibility: A strong academic background in civil or structural engineering (or a closely related field) is required. Applicants should have knowledge of structural analysis and design, especially in timber and/or steel structures. Experience or interest in finite element modelling, numerical analysis, and experimental structural testing is desirable. Candidates must be eligible for PhD enrolment at the University of Waikato.
How to apply: Interested applicants should first contact the supervisor, Professor James Lim, by email with a brief expression of interest, CV, and academic transcript. Shortlisted candidates will then be invited to submit a full application including two reference letters and a cover letter, and may be interviewed. As this is a partnership scholarship, shortlisted applicants may also be presented to the industry partner during selection.
Deadline: 31 May 2026.
