About this position
PhD Scholarships are available in Archaeology in the Resources Sector through the ARC Training Centre for Archaeology in the Resources Sector, a nationally coordinated research program involving Flinders University, The University of Queensland, and Southern Cross University in Australia.
The project focuses on critical challenges in cultural heritage, archaeology, and the resources sector, with research themes spanning technological adaptation, best-practice frameworks, organisational dynamics, and knowledge systems/two-way learning. Available project areas include geochemical provenancing of material culture in arid landscapes, Indigenous rights, cultural heritage decision-making, co-designing Indigenous-led training models, mapping Indigenous cultural landscapes using advanced archaeological geophysics, LiDAR and remote sensing for archaeological landscape detection, Indigenous data sovereignty, and archaeology/cultural heritage management in risk assessment.
This is a domestic PhD opportunity for candidates with backgrounds in archaeology, heritage studies, anthropology, environmental science, geography, social science, Indigenous studies, policy, governance, law, data science, GIS, or digital technologies. Applicants should hold or expect to complete an Honours or Master’s degree with a research component, meet PhD admission requirements at a participating university, and show strong academic performance, collaborative skills, and interest in applied, impact-driven research. Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples are strongly encouraged to apply.
Funding includes a competitive tax-free stipend of $41,555 per annum for 3.5 years, plus a 12-month placement with partner organisations for practical experience and professional development.
To apply, prepare a cover letter, CV, transcripts, and two academic reference contact details (including one from your most recent supervisor), then email the application to [email protected]. The closing date is 16 August 2026 or until filled. More information about projects and partners is available on the Centre website.
