About this position
This PhD studentship at the University of East Anglia explores how atmospheric CO2 polyisotopologues can reveal new information about Earth’s carbon cycle across land, oceans, and the atmosphere.
The project builds on the UKRI NERC POLYGRAM programme and uses rare isotopic species of carbon dioxide to investigate ecosystem productivity, carbon uptake, and carbon cycling from local to global scales. The research asks whether combined carbon and triple-oxygen isotope signatures can provide quantitative constraints that are not available from conventional atmospheric CO2 observations alone.
You will work with existing and newly collected datasets from the Weybourne Atmospheric Observatory, Alice Holt Forest Research Station, Atlantic ship transects, and global atmospheric monitoring networks. The project includes analysing seasonal and interannual variability in oxygen and carbon isotope signatures, quantifying ecosystem-scale isotope variations, and evaluating isotope gradients as indicators of global primary productivity.
Training is embedded in a collaborative environment spanning UEA’s Centre for Ocean and Atmospheric Sciences and Utrecht University. You will develop skills in laser-spectroscopic measurement of CO2 and H2O isotopologues, advanced statistical analysis, environmental time-series modelling, and scientific communication through conferences and publications. A research visit to Utrecht and specialist training/field measurements are also included.
The studentship is fully funded for eligible candidates under ARIES/UKRI terms and conditions. Funding covers tuition fees, a maintenance stipend of £21,805 per year for 2026/27, and a research training and support grant. A limited number of studentships are available for international applicants, with the difference between home and international fees waived by the registering university; however, relocation and UK living costs such as visa fees and the health surcharge are not covered.
Applicants should be enthusiastic, self-motivated, and interested in combining experimental work with quantitative data analysis. The deadline is 16 December 2026, and applications should be submitted via the University of East Anglia’s postgraduate research application portal.
