About this position

An industrially funded PhD studentship is available at the University of Warwick through the Interdisciplinary Collaboration in System Medicine (ICSM) Research Group. The project focuses on digital twins for emergency medicine, with applications in next-generation ventilation technologies and critical care scenarios.

The successful candidate will help develop cohorts of digital twins in Matlab to model: intubated patients receiving pressure-controlled mechanical ventilation, spontaneously breathing patients receiving non-invasive ventilation via facemask, and patients receiving CPR after cardiac arrest. The models will be fully configurable, include a user interface, and be designed to run faster than real time.

Research questions include closed-loop ventilation control, identifying patient characteristics from field data, and computational optimisation of CPR protocols. The work is carried out in collaboration with the industrial partner Weinmann Emergency Medical Technology GmbH, making this a strong opportunity for students interested in clinically relevant modelling with translational impact.

Funding includes the UK tuition fee level plus a tax-free stipend currently set at £21,805 for 3.5 years of full-time study at the prevailing UKRI rate. International candidates are welcome, although they must cover the fee difference. Applicants should have a good 2.1 Bachelor’s degree or a Master’s degree in Engineering, Computational or Physical Sciences, or Physiology/Medical Sciences, and should have a keen interest in mathematical/computational modelling and simulation.
