About this position

[Home tuition fee waiver; living costs stipend at the UKRI recommended level (£21,805 for 2026-27); £10,000 research allowance in total; additional Proficio support of £2,500 for training courses.]

This PhD studentship at the University of Essex sits within the Sustainable Transitions – Leverhulme Doctoral Training Programme and is designed to support an applicant from an underrepresented background. The award combines a fully funded master’s degree with a fully funded interdisciplinary PhD research degree.

The project focuses on the practical implementation of the human right to water in developing countries. It examines how different legal and governance systems implement this right at national level and explores what steps may improve effectiveness. The research also allows space to consider the right to water in settings where competing priorities, governance challenges, and stressed water supplies create pressures for citizens and communities.

This is an interdisciplinary project linking legal analysis with governance-focused methods. The successful applicant would likely begin with an appropriate master’s degree, such as an LLM in Law, before progressing to doctoral research. Training support is provided throughout the programme, including interdisciplinary research methods training, support in a secondary discipline, and ongoing development.

Funding is substantial and includes a home tuition fee waiver, a living costs stipend at the UKRI recommended level, and a £10,000 research allowance for authorised costs such as supplies, equipment, and fieldwork. Scholars also benefit from Proficio support worth £2,500 for training courses, and become part of the University of Essex Centre for Environment and Society.

Eligibility is restricted to UK-domiciled applicants who do not already hold a Master’s degree from the host institution and who meet specific background criteria related to low-income household status and/or specified ethnic background categories. The project would suit a candidate with a background in law or international law, while prior training in international development or environmental governance is not required.

The closing date is 14 September 2026 at 11:59 pm BST.
