The University of Exeter’s Department of Engineering is inviting applications for a funded PhD studentship in Design and Structural Dynamics of Offshore Aquaculture Systems (Ref. 5899). The project is based in the Renewable Energy Group within the Faculty of Environment, Science and Economy at the Penryn Campus in Cornwall, United Kingdom.

This PhD focuses on the dynamic structural response of offshore aquaculture farms under coupled environmental loads such as waves, currents, and extreme storms, and on potential impacts on fish behaviour. The project sits at the intersection of civil engineering, mechanical engineering, offshore engineering, hydrodynamics, structural dynamics, and related marine systems research. Depending on the student’s background and interests, the work may combine structural mechanics, fluid dynamics, offshore engineering, and animal behaviour.

Funding for eligible students includes Home tuition fees plus an annual tax-free stipend of at least £21,805 for 3.5 years full-time (or pro rata for part-time study). International applicants may also apply, but the award only covers part of the international tuition fee and does not include a living stipend; additional costs such as visa fees, Immigration Health Surcharge, and relocation expenses must be covered by the student.

Applicants should have, or be about to obtain, a First or Upper Second Class UK Honours degree (or equivalent) in engineering, physical sciences, or a closely related discipline. The advert particularly welcomes candidates with a degree in civil, mechanical, ocean, or offshore engineering, an interest in structural dynamics or hydrodynamics, and experience with MATLAB, Python, CFD, finite element methods, offshore structures, or aquaculture. Non-native English speakers must meet the university’s English language requirements.
