About this position

PhD studentship at the University of Nottingham in Environmental Sciences, focused on cover crops, sugar beet nutrition, soil health, climate resilience, agronomy, soil science, microbial ecology, and crop modelling.

The project is titled Nutrient Dynamics in Cover Crops and Their Implications for Sugar Beet Nutrition, Soil Health, and Climate Resilience. It will investigate how cover crops release nutrients, affect sugar beet yield and quality, influence pest/disease incidence, and shape soil microbial communities. The work combines controlled decomposition experiments, multi-year field trials at commercial BBRO sites and the University of Nottingham farm, and microbial analyses (PLFA, 16S/ITS sequencing).

You will be based at Sutton Bonington Campus and work with supervisors Dr Hannah Cooper, Dr Nicholas Girkin, and Dr Georgina Barratt (BBRO). The project offers training in nutrient cycling, microbial community profiling, predictive modelling, and practical grower-facing tool development, including a fertiliser credit calculator and species selection guide.

This is a funded PhD studentship for 48 months, jointly supported by BBRO, the Morley Agricultural Foundation, and the Lugden Hill Trust. It includes tuition fees and a tax-free stipend at current BBSRC rates. The opportunity is only open to UK citizens.

Applicants should have at least a 2:1 degree in environmental science, agriculture, plant science, or a related subject. Modelling experience is helpful but not required. Deadline: 7 September 2026. Apply by emailing a one-page cover letter and CV, and reference SCI3072.
