About this position

PhD Studentship at the University of Cambridge in the Department of Pathology on functional effects of dysregulated microRNA-mediated cellular pathways in malignant germ cell tumours.

The project, led by Dr Matthew Murray, focuses on cancer biology and translational biomedical research. It builds on prior work targeting over-expressed miR-371~373 and miR-302/367 and replenishing downregulated miRNAs such as let-7 and miR-100-5p/125b-5p in malignant germ cell tumour cell lines. The new studentship will extend these observations in engineered inducible cell lines, examine combination approaches with cisplatin, and investigate novel agents that target affected cellular pathways before moving to in vivo studies.

This is a fully funded PhD studentship for 4 years from October 2027. Funding covers the stipend at the current Research Council rate and Home University Fees. The opportunity is available only to candidates who qualify for the UK Home fee rate.

Eligibility highlights include a relevant undergraduate honours or Masters degree with an equivalent of a UK upper second-class honours (2.1) or higher, plus completion of the language requirements for admission by the time of interview. Applicants must also submit a motivation statement, outline their research interests and background, and describe the qualities and experience they will bring to the role.

Applications must be submitted online via the University of Cambridge Applicant Portal for PhD in Pathology (BLPA22). Two academic references are required, and the application must be complete by the closing date.

Deadline: 2 December 2026. Quote reference PK51398 in your application and correspondence.
