The project focuses on selective nanoparticle targeting of senescent alveolar epithelium using an alveolar organoid model. Research themes include idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF), alveolar type 2 (AT2) cell biology, epithelial senescence, senomodulatory therapeutics, senolytic delivery, nanoparticle engineering, and automated screening platforms.

The student will be jointly supervised by Dr Jennifer Dickens (CIMR), Dr James Garnett and Dr Catherine Overed-Sayer (AstraZeneca), with additional collaboration from Prof. Ljiljana Fruk in the Department of Chemical Engineering and Biotechnology.

Funding: full funding covers maintenance at £21,500 per annum plus the University Composition Fee. Funding starts from 1 October 2027. International-fee students may need extra support to cover the difference between home and overseas fees; self-funding is not permitted.

Eligibility: applicants should have or soon expect a first or upper second-class degree (or equivalent) in a relevant subject suitable for cell biology research. The opportunity is open to UK citizens or overseas students who meet UK residency requirements or can secure additional scholarship/funding support for international fees.
