About this position
This is a fully funded Masters Plus PhD studentship at the University of Essex under the Sustainable Transitions – Leverhulme Doctoral Training Programme. The award combines an initial Master's phase with progression to an interdisciplinary PhD, supporting training across methods, theory, and applied research in sustainability transitions.
The project area is centred on sustainability business, with proposals invited in the broad field of environment and sustainability as it relates to business, governance, commerce, or trade. The programme is designed to develop the next generation of interdisciplinary researchers who can contribute to sustainable transitions at local, national, and international levels.
Successful applicants will begin one of the following Master's degrees in January 2027: MSc Business Analytics, MSc International Business and Entrepreneurship, or MSc International Logistics and Supply Chain Management. During the Master's year, candidates will refine their research proposal in close consultation with the supervisory team before continuing into the PhD phase.
Applicants are asked to submit a 1000-word maximum project area proposal. In the proposal, candidates must identify one additional discipline to integrate into the research so that the project is interdisciplinary: Law, Sociology, Government, or Life Sciences. Prior knowledge of the additional discipline is not required, as training will be provided when the PhD begins.
Funding is excellent and includes a home tuition fee waiver, a living costs stipend at the UKRI recommended level, and a research allowance of £10,000 in total for approved research expenses such as supplies, equipment, and fieldwork. The stipend for 2026-27 is £21,805. Doctoral scholars may also access £2,500 through Proficio for training courses and additional development.
Eligibility is limited to UK domiciled applicants who do not already hold a Master's degree and who meet the widening participation criteria described in the advert. Applicants must also have an undergraduate degree in a business-related subject. The programme is linked to the University of Essex's Centre for Environment and Society, offering events and networking opportunities alongside support from the Sustainable Transitions management team and supervisory team.
The application deadline is 14 September 2026 at 11:59 pm BST. Applicants should use the University of Essex application page and submit the required proposal before the closing date.
