About this position

[4-year Norwich Research Park Biosciences Doctoral Training Partnership PhD studentship; includes payment of tuition fees, a stipend for living expenses at the 2026/27 rate of £21,805, and a Research Training Support Grant of £5,000 per year.]

PhD Studentship at the University of East Anglia focused on unlocking healthy ageing by harnessing proteostasis pathways to promote extracellular matrix (ECM) function.

This project addresses a major challenge in ageing research: how age-related changes in cellular stress responses and ECM structure contribute to frailty and disease. The research explores whether activating a key stress response can alter ECM composition, structure and function during ageing, and whether these changes improve healthspan.

The project is based at the University of East Anglia and is funded as a 4-year Norwich Research Park Biosciences Doctoral Training Partnership PhD studentship. Funding includes tuition fees, an annual stipend for living expenses, and a Research Training Support Grant.

Methodology will combine transcriptomics and proteomics to profile ECM composition, confocal microscopy and transmission electron microscopy to study ECM architecture, and genetic as well as physiological and survival assays to test how ECM changes influence healthspan. The project is strongly rooted in ageing biology, cell biology, omics-based analysis, genetics, and bioinformatics.

Training will include experimental design, scientific writing, presentation skills, bioinformatics, ageing biology, cell biology, omics approaches, and genetic techniques, together with opportunities to attend external courses, conferences, seminars, research discussion groups, and journal clubs.

Applicants should be enthusiastic and highly motivated, with a strong interest in ageing biology and genetics. Applications should be submitted through the University of East Anglia postgraduate research application portal before 30 November.
