About this position

[Home fees plus an annual UKRI-equivalent stipend; stipend rate for commencing study on 1 January 2027 is £16,354 per year (pro-rata of £21,805), paid monthly and likely to increase each year. International students may apply but must cover the difference between Home and International fees.]

PhD studentship at the University of Strathclyde on the history of unorthodox health activism in Britain after 1948. This studentship is designed for a research project exploring alternative approaches to health and the communities, activists, and movements that promoted them in postwar Britain.

The project asks how people became involved in these movements, what everyday experiences of health and illness they shaped, and how public health practitioners, health policy makers, and health workers responded. The studentship is affiliated with the Wellcome-funded project A Transnational History of AIDS Denial: Origins, Manifestations and Persistence, 1981 to the present, and the department particularly welcomes projects connected to similar unorthodox approaches to health in the 20th and/or 21st century.

Possible research directions include the late-20th-century British anti-vaxx movement, cancer denial, the history of complementary and alternative medicine (CAM), media representations of alternative health, regional unorthodox health activism, spiritual or religious health communities, and wellness movements. Applicants are encouraged to develop their own research proposal within this theme.

Funding covers Home fees and an equivalent UKRI stipend for the duration of the PhD, which must be completed within three years. The stipend rate for study starting on 1 January 2027 is £16,354 per year (pro-rata of £21,805), paid monthly and likely to rise annually. International applicants are welcome, but successful candidates would need to cover the difference between Home and International fees.

The application deadline is 30 October 2026. Applicants should use the university application link and direct project-specific questions to Dr Hannah Elizabeth. General application enquiries can be sent to the scholarship contact email.
