About this position

[Fully funded studentship covering fees, maintenance stipend of £21,805 p.a. for 2026/27, and a research training and support grant (RTSG). Limited support is available for international applicants with home/international fee difference waived by the university, but relocation costs, visa costs, and the health surcharge are not covered.]

This PhD studentship at the University of East Anglia focuses on winds and waves in the Alpine Mountains, with a strong emphasis on atmospheric dynamics, mountain meteorology, and numerical weather prediction. The project addresses a major forecasting challenge: how winds flowing over mountains generate orographic gravity waves, how these waves propagate and break down, and how the resulting gravity wave drag influences upper-level winds, turbulence, and weather prediction skill.

The successful candidate will work with observations from the TEAMx campaign over the Alps, a major international research programme conducted in 2025 to improve weather forecasting in complex terrain. The research will use measurements from weather balloons and aircraft to identify periods of strong wave activity, investigate the mechanisms of wave generation and breakdown, and compare observations with multi-scale simulations using Met Office NWP models. A key part of the PhD will be to evaluate model realism and optimise model performance to improve representation of orographic gravity waves in forecasting systems.

The studentship offers training in mountain meteorological processes, fluid dynamics, Met Office NWP modelling, and data analysis. The student will also have opportunities to interact with scientists at the British Antarctic Survey and the University of Bath through a related TEAMx project, participate in project meetings, attend international TEAMx meetings, and benefit from cohort residential training plus dedicated conference and skills-development support.

This is a fully funded ARIES PhD studentship subject to UKRI terms and conditions. For eligible candidates, funding includes tuition fees, a maintenance stipend of £21,805 per year for 2026/27, and a research training and support grant (RTSG). A limited number of studentships are available for international applicants, with the difference between home and international fees waived by the registering university. Applicants should note that relocation costs, visa costs, and the UK health surcharge are not covered.

Applicants should hold a degree in Meteorology, Physics, Maths, or a closely related quantitative discipline, and should be interested in meteorology, data analysis, and numerical modelling. The deadline is 23:59 on 16 December 2026, and applications should be submitted through the University of East Anglia application page.

What's required

Applicants should have a degree in Meteorology, Physics, Maths, or a similar quantitative science. An interest in meteorology, data analysis, and numerical modelling is essential. UKRI eligibility criteria apply; successful candidates who meet them will receive full funding. International applicants may be considered for a limited number of studentships, subject to fee-waiver arrangements, but additional UK living and relocation costs are not covered.

How to apply

Apply via the application link on the University of East Anglia advert. Use the 'Apply' button on the page and submit before 23:59 on 16 December 2026.
