About this position

PhD Studentship: CSC–University of Bristol Joint PhD Scholarship (2027 entry) in CFD, turbulence, porous-media flows, environmental fluid mechanics, and physics-informed / data-driven machine learning.

The project is based at the University of Bristol and is supervised by Dr Mohammad Jadidi in the School of Civil, Aerospace and Design Engineering. Research themes include pore-resolved and interface-resolved LES of turbulent flow and heat/mass transfer in engineered porous media, physics-informed neural networks (PINNs), hybrid physics–AI methods for hidden-field discovery and inverse problems, reduced-order modelling of turbulent environmental flows, and urban/canopy/terrain-aware dispersion with atmospheric stability effects.

The post is aimed at CSC-eligible candidates. A strong degree in Mechanical, Aerospace, Civil/Environmental Engineering, Applied Mathematics, Physics, or a closely related field is required. A background in fluid mechanics and CFD is expected; experience with LES/DNS and OpenFOAM is desirable. Experience or interest in scientific machine learning, PINNs, and tools such as PyTorch, JAX, or TensorFlow is an advantage.

Funding is through the China Scholarship Council and the University of Bristol joint scholarship scheme. The post does not list a stipend amount in the advertisement, but it is presented as a scholarship/studentship opportunity rather than a standard job.

How to apply: first email Dr Jadidi with your CV, a short statement of research interests, and your English-test status if already taken. Then follow the Bristol scholarship guidance and submit the postgraduate application via the university portal.

Deadline: Friday, 20 November 2026. International applications are welcome, subject to CSC eligibility.
