About this position
This fully funded PhD project at Heriot-Watt University, as part of the NERC-funded ECOWILD Centre for Doctoral Training, investigates the toxicity of pollutant mixtures and heat waves on threatened freshwater taxa, specifically amphibians and molluscs. The research addresses urgent biodiversity declines by examining how environmental stressors impact these sensitive groups, which are among the most threatened vertebrate and invertebrate taxa globally.
Students will collaborate with Natural England and utilize data from the National Capital Ecosystem Assessment monitoring programme to identify candidate ponds. The project employs both field-based and mesocosm approaches to assess the combined effects of pollutants and heat waves, measuring responses at both community and biomarker levels (e.g., oxidative stress, detoxification). This work will generate novel data on the diversity and ecotoxicological responses of freshwater taxa, contributing to national monitoring efforts and informing conservation strategies.
The supervisory team includes Dr Frances Orton (Heriot-Watt University), Dr Graeme Shaw (Natural England), Dr Heidrun Feuchtmayr (UK Centre for Ecology & Hydrology), and Dr Theodore Henry (Heriot-Watt University), offering expertise in ecology, ecotoxicology, and environmental policy. The project is open to both home and international students; however, international applicants must secure co-funding to cover the difference between home and international tuition fees (currently about £20,000 per year).
Applicants should hold a first or upper second-class honours degree (or equivalent) in a relevant subject, with a Masters’ qualification or equivalent experience preferred. Essential skills include fieldwork, data analysis, and familiarity with policy or regulation. English language proficiency is required (IELTS 6.5 overall, no component below 6.0; or TOEFL 85 overall with minimum section scores). The selection process is inclusive and considers individual circumstances.
The scholarship covers full tuition for Home students and a stipend of £20,780 per year (2025-26 rates) for 44 months. The application deadline is 5pm BST, 5 May 2026, with interviews expected between 26 May and 5 June. The successful candidate will start in October 2026. For more information and to apply, visit the ECOWILD website or contact Dr Frances Orton at [email protected].
