About this position
Karolinska Institutet is advertising a postdoctoral scholarship in cardiometabolic vascular disease within the Division of Cardiology, Department of Medicine, Solna, in Stockholm, Sweden.
The project is hosted by the research group led by Associate Professor Zhichao Zhou and focuses on type 2 diabetes-associated cardiovascular complications. The research aims to characterize the role of red blood cell-derived non-coding RNAs in the development of vascular dysfunction, with the broader goal of identifying new therapeutic targets and reliable biomarkers to prevent cardiovascular dysfunction and predict cardiovascular events.
The work combines clinically based and molecular mechanistic investigations using patient materials, rodent diabetic models, gene-modified mouse models, and cell models. Methods include isolation of red blood cells and extracellular vesicles, cell culture, immunohistochemistry, Western blot, qPCR, vessel reactivity assessment with Wire myograph, and in vivo rat and mouse work.
Applicants should have a strong background in experimental and/or translational cardiovascular research, with publications in cardiovascular disease and vascular biology. Experience with isolated arteries and/or animal work is expected, and prior work with non-coding RNA is meritorious. Good English, communication skills, and teamwork are emphasized.
This is a scholarship-based postdoctoral position. The scholarship is tax free, paid for twelve months at a time, and disbursed on a six-month basis. In exceptional cases, shorter periods may be accepted. The scholarship is intended for foreign researchers pursuing postdoctoral merit in Sweden and may be granted for up to two years within a four-year period after the doctorate.

What's required
Applicants should have a strong research background in experimental and/or translational cardiovascular research, documented by publications related to cardiovascular disease and vascular biology. Experience with isolated arteries and/or animal work is required, and experience with laboratory methods including Western blotting, immunohistochemistry, and cell culture is expected. Previous documented experience with non-coding RNA studies is meritorious. Good social and communication skills and good spoken and written English are expected. Applicants must hold a doctorate or an equivalent foreign degree, or complete all degree requirements before the intended start date. The scholarship is only open to foreign researchers who have not carried out all or part of their academic education in Sweden or at KI.
