About this position

Umeå University is offering a 2-year postdoctoral scholarship within the project “Relationship history: gains and losses of endosymbiosis” at the Department of Mathematics and Mathematical Statistics and the interdisciplinary research centre IceLab in Umeå, Sweden.

The project focuses on mathematical modelling of endosymbioses, using tools such as dynamical systems and metabolic models to study how symbiotic relationships form, persist, or dissolve over evolutionary time. The postdoctoral fellow will work under the supervision of Associate Professor Eric Libby and join an active research team studying microbial evolution.

Funding: the scholarship is financed and administered by the Kempe Foundation. It is a tax-free stipend of SEK 750,000 for two years, equivalent to SEK 375,000 per year.

Eligibility highlights: applicants must hold a doctoral degree (or equivalent) by the decision date. Preferred backgrounds include mathematical biology, evolutionary biology, or applied mathematics. Required skills include strong English communication and experience with a numerical programming language such as MATLAB, Python, or Julia. Experience with modelling biological systems and knowledge of endosymbiosis, evolution, or microbiology are desirable.

Application: submit a cover letter, CV with publication list, degree certificate or proof of expected completion, diplomas and grades, thesis and one relevant article, other supporting documents, and contact details for two references. Applications must be submitted through Umeå University’s Varbi system by 2026-08-30.

Funding details

Full funding including tuition fees and living expenses is available for this position. The scholarship covers all educational costs and provides a monthly stipend.
