About this position

Umeå University / Umeå Plant Science Centre (UPSC) is advertising a 2-year postdoctoral scholarship in plant cell wall biology, biophysics, and spatial transcriptomics at the Department of Plant Physiology in Umeå, Sweden.

The project, “4DWalls: Exploring the Dynamics of Arabidopsis thaliana Root Cell Walls Through Single Cell Mapping”, is led by Assistant Professor Laura Bacete and focuses on how growing plant cells establish and respond to cell-wall states over short timescales and how these states connect to cell-type-specific gene programmes. The work integrates Brillouin microscopy, OPTIR spectroscopy, and Xenium in situ transcriptomics to build a time-resolved atlas of the Arabidopsis root transition zone.

This opportunity is especially relevant for candidates interested in plant biology, cell biology, biophysics, biochemistry, computational biology, transcriptomics, and data integration. The group already has an established Brillouin microscope and protocols for quantitative wall-mechanics measurements, providing a strong experimental base.

Funding: the scholarship is funded by the Kempe Foundation, pays 360,000 SEK per year tax-free, and includes PI-covered running costs.

Eligibility highlights: applicants must hold a PhD (or equivalent) in Plant Biology, Biophysics, Biochemistry, Cell Biology, Computational Biology, or a related field. Strong molecular/cell biology skills, experience with large biological datasets, scripting (Python/R or equivalent), and very good English are required. Experience with Arabidopsis, microscopy, plant cell walls, spatial transcriptomics, single-cell genomics, modelling, biostatistics, or image analysis is considered a merit.

Application deadline: 31 August 2026. Apply via Umeå University’s Varbi recruitment system and upload the requested documents in English or Swedish.
