About this position

Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI) is accepting applications for its 2027–2028 Postdoctoral Scholarships. These are 18-month postdoctoral appointments designed to extend training and advance research careers in ocean-related fields.

WHOI welcomes applicants with doctorates in oceanography, chemistry, engineering, geology, geophysics, mathematics, meteorology, physics, biology, economics, marine policy, and other fields that contribute to WHOI’s mission. Applications from all areas of ocean sciences and engineering are encouraged. Special scholarships will also be awarded in Marine Policy and Ocean Carbon Cycling, with additional support possible for cross-cutting emerging topics.

Scholars conduct independent research with one or more WHOI Resident Scientific or Senior Technical Staff members. The institution strongly recommends contacting potential advisors before applying, and sponsor support for research activities may be considered in selection. WHOI also offers mentoring, proposal-writing workshops, a Postdoctoral Science Symposium, networking opportunities, and career development events.

Eligibility: applicants must have earned their PhD no more than 3 years before the start date. The doctoral degree is required by the time of appointment, and applicants should have a command of English. Certain groups are not eligible, including MIT-WHOI Joint Program students, recent WHOI postdocs, long-term WHOI guest students, and applicants whose doctoral co-advisor is a WHOI employee.

Funding: recipients receive an annual stipend of at least $73,000 for the 18-month appointment, plus relocation and health/welfare allowances and an independent research budget for travel, equipment, supplies, and special services.

Deadline: applications close on October 15, 2026. Awardees may begin between January 1 and October 1, 2027, and are expected to reside at WHOI for at least two-thirds of the appointment period.
