About this position

Postdoctoral stipend opportunity in virus-initiated membrane remodelling at Umeå University, Sweden.

The Faculty of Medicine, Department of Medical and Translational Biology, is offering a 2-year postdoctoral stipend focused on the mechanistic understanding of how viruses create membrane-enclosed replication organelles in host cells. The project centers on flaviviruses and alphaviruses, with particular interest in how specific lipid species and membrane properties contribute to replication organelle formation.

The successful candidate will work in a collaborative scientific environment with expertise in virology, biochemistry, structural biology, cell biology, and imaging. Access is provided to Umeå Core Facility for Electron Microscopy, the Biochemical Imaging Centre at Umeå University, and other university facilities. The project is associated with the Lundmark lab and supervised by Richard Lundmark.

Key tasks include culturing and analyzing mammalian cell models for infection, designing infection models for flaviviruses and alphaviruses, generating reconstituted membrane model systems, performing lipid and protein biochemistry, advanced live-cell fluorescence microscopy (including TIRF and SIM), developing image-analysis workflows, and conducting correlative light and electron microscopy.

Eligibility requires a doctorate or equivalent qualification in cell biology or virology by the time the stipend decision is made. Applicants should have extensive practical experience in real-time fluorescence microscopy and quantitative image analysis, plus experience in cloning, protein and lipid biochemistry, and virus work. Strong written and spoken English is required. Candidates who completed their PhD within the last three years are preferred, though exceptions may apply for special reasons. Experience with lipid membranes, membrane-associated proteins, membrane remodelling, or electron microscopy is advantageous.

The application must include a brief research-interest statement, CV, list of publications, doctoral degree certificate and other relevant degrees, and contact details for two referees. Applications must be submitted in English through the Varbi e-recruitment system by 2026-09-18.

What's required

Applicants must have a doctorate or equivalent qualification in cell biology or virology by the time the stipend decision is made. Strong practical experience in real-time fluorescence microscopy and quantitative image analysis is required, along with practical experience in cloning, protein and lipid biochemistry, and work with viruses. Applicants must have documented good written and spoken English, and be able to conduct independent scientific work and write scientific papers. Preference is given to candidates who completed the PhD within the last three years, with possible exceptions for special reasons. Background in lipid membranes, membrane-associated proteins, membrane remodelling, or electron microscopy is advantageous, as are organizational skills, collaboration, and enthusiasm for the research area.

How to apply

Apply through the Umeå University Varbi e-recruitment system. Submit a brief research-interest statement, CV, list of publications, doctoral degree certificate and other relevant degrees, plus contact details for two referees. The application must be written in English and received by 2026-09-18.
