About this position

With the increasing global burden of type 2 diabetes, innovative approaches to support metabolic health are urgently needed. This PhD project at Monash University Malaysia, within the Department of Pharmacy, aims to develop a translational research platform to evaluate the biological effects of selected functional foods relevant to glucose regulation. The research will utilize advanced in vitro systems to investigate key cellular processes associated with metabolic function, followed by preliminary human-based evaluation to assess potential benefits.

By integrating mechanistic insights with early-stage validation, the project offers a strategic framework for identifying and developing novel bioactive solutions with strong potential for future commercial and health applications. The research areas span biochemistry, biotechnology, cell biology, molecular biology, pharmaceutical chemistry, biomedical engineering, endocrinology, nutrition, pharmacology, and tissue engineering.

The main supervisor is Dr. Wendy Yeo Wai Yeng, with associate supervisors Dr. Yeap Li Ling and Dr. Tan Ji Wei. The Graduate Research Excellence Scholarship (GRES) is available for successful applicants, providing a full tuition fee waiver and a monthly stipend for up to 3 years 6 months. To be eligible, candidates must possess a minimum academic qualification of First Class Honours (H1) or its equivalence (H1E) recognised by Monash University Malaysia and satisfy English language requirements.

Applicants are encouraged to first contact the main supervisor with their academic background and achievements to determine suitability for the research topic. If a good fit is established, applications should be submitted online, referencing the advertised research topic. The deadline for applications is July 30, 2026. For further information, consult the application submission guide and scholarship/course application process.
