About this position

This PhD project at Monash University Malaysia focuses on developing a cutting-edge three-dimensional (3D) bioprinted in vitro model that integrates skeletal muscle and adipose tissue to investigate metabolic disorders, particularly insulin resistance and type 2 diabetes. Conventional in vitro models often fail to capture the complex physiological interactions between tissues involved in glucose regulation. By leveraging advanced bioprinting and tissue engineering techniques, this research aims to create a more physiologically relevant platform for studying metabolic tissue function.

The model will be used to evaluate selected functional foods for their potential to support metabolic health, providing a predictive and translational system for identifying novel bioactive solutions. The project is highly interdisciplinary, drawing on biochemistry, biotechnology, cell biology, molecular biology, pharmaceutical chemistry, biomedical engineering, endocrinology, nutrition, pharmacology, and tissue engineering. The research is based in the Department of Pharmacy and supervised by Dr. Wendy Yeo Wai Yeng, with support from Dr. Lim Wei Meng and Dr. Ts Ho Kok Hoe.

Successful applicants will be awarded the Graduate Research Excellence Scholarship (GRES), which includes a full tuition fee waiver and a monthly stipend for up to 3 years 6 months. To be eligible, candidates must have a First Class Honours (H1) or its equivalence (H1E) recognised by Monash University Malaysia and meet English language requirements. The project offers excellent opportunities for students interested in metabolic health, functional food research, and translational biomedical science.

Applicants are encouraged to contact the main supervisor with their academic background and achievements to determine suitability for the research topic. If a good fit is established, applications should be submitted via the provided link, referencing the advertised research topic. Further details on application requirements and scholarship information are available online.
