About this position

University College London is offering the Research Excellence Scholarship (UCL-RES) for outstanding doctoral applicants. This is a fully funded scholarship for prospective MPhil/PhD and EngD students starting at UCL in the 2026/27 academic year.

The award covers full tuition fees (Home or Overseas), a maintenance stipend for the standard research period, and research costs of up to £1,200 per year. For 2025/26, the stipend rate is £22,780 for full-time study; the 2026/27 rate is to be confirmed. Funding normally lasts 3 years full-time or 5 years part-time, with an extension to year 4 for integrated doctoral programmes.

Eligible applicants must have submitted a complete admission application to UCL by 9 January 2026 and must hold or expect to achieve at least a 2:1 undergraduate degree or equivalent. The scholarship is open to applicants from any country. Distance learning, non-resident PhD, and professional doctorates are not eligible.

Selection is based on academic merit, research potential, the suitability of the project proposal for available supervisors, and disciplinary need. Applicants must submit scholarship materials to their academic department, including a cover sheet, CV, lay summary of the research proposal, transcripts, and two references (one academic reference and one from the intended UCL supervisor).

This opportunity is relevant across UCL’s doctoral themes, including medicine, health and life sciences, physical sciences, engineering and mathematics, social sciences, and arts and humanities.
