Friedrich Schiller University Jena is advertising 12 doctoral research positions within the interdisciplinary Research Training Group 3014 “Photo-polarizable Interfaces and Membranes” (PHINT), funded by the German Science Foundation (DFG).

The PhD projects span a wide range of topics at the interface of chemistry, physics, biology, materials science, biomedical engineering, and education. Research areas include lipid membranes with light-controlled ion channels, photoswitchable molecules in biomembranes, molecularly thin organic membranes, 2D photoactive nanomembranes, metal-organic frameworks, poled inorganic glass surfaces, time-resolved second harmonic generation, spectroscopic studies of light-induced polarization, multi-scale modeling of transport through membranes, quantum chemical simulations, and STEM education related to photo-polarizable interfaces.

The positions are part of a collaborative and international consortium. Doctoral researchers will work on one of the listed topics, participate actively in the research and qualification programme, and benefit from interdisciplinary exchange, science communication training, and support from the Jena Graduate Academy. International research visits are also encouraged during the doctorate.

Eligibility: applicants should hold an M.Sc. degree or State Examination in Chemistry, Medicine, Physics, or a related field, and must be able to communicate in English.
