About this position

ETH Zurich is advertising 2 PhD positions in petrology and geochemistry within the Experimental Petrology Group at the Department of Earth and Planetary Sciences. The project focuses on the petrology of alkaline magmatism, including carbonatites, and the associated mineralization and magmatic processes such as partial melting, fractional crystallization, fluid saturation, and fluid compositions.

The positions are strongly experimental and will involve high-pressure laboratory work using apparatus such as piston cylinders and externally heated pressure vessels, together with a strong analytical component that may include isotopes. There may also be a field component or substantial data compilation and analysis, depending on the candidate and project direction.

Applicants should have either experimental or analytical experience, and a keen interest in applying quantitative petrological methods to characterize experimental and natural magmatic processes. The group includes about twelve PhD students and postdocs working on magmatic petrology and geochemistry, offering a collaborative research environment.

The positions are available immediately and are expected to be filled by fall 2026. The annual PhD salary is approximately 53,500 CHF, and the expected completion time at ETH is 4 years. Students are expected to contribute around 10% laboratory and/or teaching duties.

To apply, prepare a single PDF file including a statement of research interests and send inquiries/applications to Max W. Schmidt at [email protected].
