About this position
Eawag, the Swiss Federal Institute of Aquatic Science and Technology, is advertising 3 PhD positions in Evolutionary Ecology, Evolutionary Genomics, and Ecosystem Science within the Department of Fish Ecology & Evolution (FishEc).
The project is part of a recently funded Swiss National Science Foundation grant and will investigate how biotic and abiotic selection pressures shape species interactions, community assembly, and ecosystem functioning in lakes of Southern Greenland. The research focuses on threespine stickleback, diaptomus copepods, and lake food-web/ecosystem dynamics across gradients such as glacial vs non-glacial lakes and differing fish predator communities.
Project 1 centers on the evolutionary ecology of copepods, including phenotypic and genetic variation, field work, lab rearing, phenotyping, molecular lab work, bioinformatics, and possibly evolutionary simulations. Project 2 focuses on stickleback evolutionary genomics, with emphasis on adaptive capacity, genetic basis of traits, population/quantitative genetics, genomic data analysis, and bioinformatics. Project 3 examines ecosystem ecology and evolution of stickleback, including fish and invertebrate surveys, lake ecosystem functioning, and lab rearing/phenotyping.
Applicants should hold a master’s degree in Ecology, Evolutionary Biology, Organismal Biology, or Environmental Science, and be motivated to work in a collaborative, international setting. The successful candidates will be enrolled as doctoral students at the University of Bern and supervised by Dr Blake Matthews and/or Dr Philine Feulner, with co-supervision by Prof. Catherine Peichel or Prof. Claudia Bank.
The positions are funded for four years and are available from 1 January 2027 or by arrangement. The workplace is Eawag, Kastanienbaum, Switzerland.
Deadline: 31 October 2026 or until filled. Apply only via the official application webpage. Include a CV, cover letter, and contact details for two to three academic references.
