About this position
Post-doctoral Fellow in Biology at Lund University, Sweden.
This postdoctoral opening is part of an ERC-advanced grant project led by Staffan Bensch on the genetics of long-distance migration in birds. The project focuses on how inherited migratory programs guide juvenile first journeys, which genes control migratory behaviour and when/where they are expressed, and how migratory genes evolved across species with different migratory strategies.
The successful candidate will mainly contribute to themes on migratory programming and gene regulation. The work includes fieldwork in Kazakhstan, Bulgaria, and Sweden, monitoring breeding populations of songbirds, catching and colour-banding adults, locating nests, fitting loggers/transmitters, reconstructing migration routes from tracking data, preparing DNA/RNA samples, and performing bioinformatic analyses of resequencing data (mapping, SNP calling, population genetics).
Eligibility highlights: a PhD (or equivalent) in a relevant subject, completed within the last three years unless special circumstances apply; strong background in ecology and evolution of bird migration; molecular ecology skills; genomic/resequencing analysis experience; experience with songbird loggers/transmitters and migration-route reconstruction; field leadership in remote locations; and excellent English.
Employment: full-time, fixed-term for up to three years. Teaching may be included up to 20% of working hours, and the position includes three weeks of training in higher education teaching and learning.
Application: submit an English-language PDF containing a CV with publications, a short research statement (past and future interests, max three pages), contact details for at least two references, and a copy of the doctoral degree certificate plus any other relevant certificates/grades.
Deadline: 11 October 2026. Location: Lund, Sweden.

What's required
Applicants must have a PhD or equivalent in a relevant subject, completed no more than three years before the employment decision unless special circumstances apply. Required experience includes broad knowledge of ecology and evolution of bird migration, hands-on molecular ecology techniques (DNA/RNA extraction, PCR, qPCR), documented genomic analyses based on resequencing data, experience attaching loggers and transmitters to songbirds and analysing light-level and pressure data to reconstruct migration routes, experience organising fieldwork in remote locations and leading field assistants, and very good oral and written English.
How to apply
Prepare a PDF application in English with a CV and publication list, a description of past research and future research interests (max three pages), contact details for at least two references, and a copy of the doctoral degree certificate plus any other relevant certificates/grades. Submit through the university's application portal before the deadline.
