About this position

Chalmers University of Technology is recruiting up to five PhD students in the field of Nanoscience and Light in Gothenburg, Sweden. The positions are part of a broader selection process for students interested in the intersection of nanoscience, nanotechnology, and light, with possible research directions including nanophotonics, metasurfaces, quantum optics, nonlinear optics, super-resolution fluorescence imaging, photoswitches, optomechanics, plasmonics, exciton transport, and integrated photonics.

The PhD positions can be placed at any of Chalmers’ departments working in Nano+Light, and selected candidates will join one of the laboratories specializing in this area. The call emphasizes strong motivation for research at the interface of physics, materials science, and photonics, with opportunities to develop scientific ideas and communicate results in writing and orally.

Eligibility: applicants must hold a Master’s degree in natural sciences or engineering (or, for some international applicants, a 4-year Bachelor’s degree may be accepted). Strong English communication skills are required. Applicants should also demonstrate personal qualities suited to collaborative research. Experience in a Nanoscience and Light subfield is helpful but not mandatory. The final exam of the master’s studies must be after June 1, 2025, and applicants already accepted into a PhD school are not eligible.

Funding: the doctoral student positions are fully funded from the start. The appointment is fixed-term for four years, with the possibility of up to 20% teaching duties, extending the position to five years. The starting salary is 35,725 SEK per month.

Application: submit the application in English via the online system, uploading the required PDF documents. The application must include grades and a two-page reflection/personal letter explaining your background, motivation for a PhD in Nanoscience and Light, and interest in Chalmers. Incomplete applications and applications sent by email will not be considered.

Deadline: 1 September 2026. Selected candidates are expected to start by March 2027 at the latest.

Funding details

Full funding including tuition fees and living expenses is available for this position. The scholarship covers all educational costs and provides a monthly stipend.
