About this position

The Institute of Nuclear Physics of the Polish Academy of Sciences (IFJ PAN) is offering a full-time Adjunct/Post-doc position in the Department of the Structure of Atomic Nucleus (NZ22), Division of Nuclear Physics and Strong Interactions (NO2), in Kraków, Poland.

The post is part of a National Science Centre-funded project entitled “Elusive collective processes in atomic nuclei inferred from photon spectra in experiments based on hybrid setups of multi detector arrays”. The successful candidate will join an active experimental nuclear physics programme focused on the decay of Giant Resonances and gamma-decay studies of excited nuclear states. The work involves preparation, execution, and analysis of experiments at the Cyclotron Centre Bronowice (CCB) using advanced detector systems including PARIS and LaBr₃ gamma-ray detectors and KRATTA telescopes for charged particles.

The research will combine local data analysis in Kraków with datasets from experimental campaigns in France (IJCLab, Orsay) and Romania (IFIN-HH), and future experiments planned in Italy (LNL Legnaro). Responsibilities also include preparing scientific publications and presenting results at international conferences.

This is a temporary, full-time postdoctoral appointment for 12 months, with a starting date between 15 November 2026 and 15 January 2027. The monthly gross salary is 7,950 PLN, with additional remuneration possible depending on length of service and, where applicable, work under ionizing radiation conditions. PhD degree in physics or related disciplines, obtained in the year of employment in the project or within 7 years before 1 January of the year of employment in the project; it is permissible to obtain the doctoral degree after the recruitment process has concluded but before employment starts, provided an expected completion document is submitted. Required experience includes practical knowledge of gamma radiation energy measurement techniques (scintillation detectors) or light charged particles, experience in experimental nuclear physics, a documented scientific record with publications in reputable international journals, analytical skills, independent problem-solving ability, and very good spoken and written English. Preferred qualifications include experience with theoretical calculations using the FRESCO code or other DWBA-based models, practical knowledge of Geant4 or related simulation tools, and knowledge of ROOT plus C++/Python for physical data analysis.
