About this position

The PhD project "Aerodynamics and Aeroacoustics of eVTOL Propulsion in a Steady and Unsteady Environment" at Queen Mary University of London offers an exciting opportunity to contribute to the rapidly evolving field of Urban Air Mobility (UAM). As electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) aircraft and distributed propulsion systems become increasingly important for sustainable urban transport, this research aims to address the gap in understanding their aerodynamic and aeroacoustic behavior, especially under unsteady flow conditions such as gusts.

Based in the School of Engineering and Materials Science, you will join the Centre for Intelligent Transport research group, working alongside passionate researchers and supervisors Dr H Biler and Dr N Zang. The project leverages state-of-the-art facilities, including a recently renovated anechoic chamber and low-speed wind tunnels equipped with advanced flow and acoustics diagnostics. You will develop expertise in experimental aeroacoustics, focusing on how urban flow disturbances interact with eVTOL propulsion systems and influence noise generation. The research aims to generate comprehensive flow field and noise data, improving knowledge of aerodynamic responses and contributing to quieter, more efficient UAM technologies.

Collaboration is a key aspect of this project. You will have opportunities to engage with UK and international research networks such as the Vertical Lift Network, UK Acoustics Network+, and UK Fluids Network, building a strong foundation for your research career. The project is well-funded through EPSRC studentships, available to both Home and International students, though international places are limited and highly competitive due to EPSRC regulations.

Applicants should have a master’s degree (or international equivalent) in mathematics or engineering. Exceptional candidates with a first-class undergraduate degree may also be considered. A strong interest in experimental techniques, as well as excellent communication and teamwork skills, are essential. Two PhD positions are available, and successful candidates will work closely together throughout the project.
