About this position
This PhD project at the University of Southampton explores the science behind impact sounds in cricket, golf, baseball, and tennis, aiming to reveal how these acoustic signals relate to the physics and performance quality of each strike. By integrating advanced acoustic analysis, physics-based modelling, and machine learning, the research seeks to quantify the information hidden in the sounds athletes use to judge shot quality and ball speed.
The project will investigate how acoustic signatures correspond to metrics such as impact mechanics and ball trajectory, using both controlled experiments and in-game data. You will validate acoustic models against tracking measurements to develop robust, generalizable performance indicators. The ultimate goal is to bridge the gap between elite-level data and accessible, low-cost coaching tools for grassroots sports environments.
A unique aspect of this opportunity is the direct collaboration with Hawk-Eye Innovations, a global leader in sports vision and tracking technology. You will benefit from industrial placements at Hawk-Eye, gaining hands-on experience with world-leading tracking systems and receiving training at the intersection of sports engineering, data science, and acoustics. The programme also offers taught modules in acoustics, dynamics, vibration, and machine learning, as well as bespoke training on technical topics relevant to your research.
Applicants must hold a UK 2:1 honours degree or its international equivalent in engineering, physics, maths, computer science, or a related scientific discipline. You should demonstrate initiative in problem-solving, curiosity and passion for science, and the ability to work effectively in a team. English language qualifications are required if applicable.
The project is partially sponsored by Hawk-Eye Innovations. Horizon Europe fee waivers automatically cover the difference between overseas and UK fees for qualifying students. Competition-based Presidential Bursaries and studentships may cover UK-level tuition fees and a stipend for living costs for top-ranked applicants. Funding is awarded on a rolling basis, so early application is encouraged.
The University of Southampton is committed to equality, diversity, and inclusivity, and welcomes applicants from all backgrounds. The School of Engineering holds an Athena SWAN award and offers flexible working patterns, generous maternity policy, onsite childcare, and a range of benefits to support well-being and work-life balance. The university is also recognized for its commitment to sustainability.
