Ghent University is offering a PhD-oriented academic appointment within the Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences, Department FW01 - Pharmaceutics, in Belgium. The position is centered on doctoral research in multi-omics on minimally invasive microbiopsies, with at least half of the assignment devoted to research in preparation for a doctoral dissertation.

The research project focuses on developing and optimizing methods to simultaneously analyse RNA and proteins from very small tissue samples (around 1 mm³). The broader aim is longitudinal molecular profiling and the identification of diagnostic biomarkers in a translational and clinical context. This makes the role highly relevant for candidates interested in multi-omics, molecular diagnostics, and biomarker discovery.

In addition to research, the appointment includes teaching and service duties. The successful candidate will support practical classes for “Biotechnology and Protein Medicines” in the Master’s programme of Pharmaceutical Care and Drug Development, and for “Biochemistry and biotechnology” in the Bachelor of Science in Pharmaceutical Sciences. The role also includes supervision of master’s students and participation in internal and external departmental services.

Applicants must hold a Master in Pharmaceutical Sciences or an equivalent degree by the start of the appointment. For diplomas awarded outside the European Union, a certificate of equivalence (NARIC) is required. Strong assets include experience with Next Generation Sequencing (NGS), combined RNA/protein analysis, bioinformatics, statistical methods for multi-omics integration, experimental design, protocol optimization, and rigorous documentation. Familiarity with laboratory equipment, biotechnology, recombinant proteins, and protein-based medicines is important, and excellent teaching and communication skills are expected.

The appointment is for two years and may be renewed twice for two more years, subject to positive evaluation. The earliest start date is 1 November 2026. Salary is based on scale AAP3.
