About this position
The CVPD research group is opening a fully funded PhD position within the recently awarded TOSBI project (TOwards Scalable and generalized Solutions in Biomedical Images).
?? The doctoral research will focus on developing novel deep learning methodologies to address three of the biggest challenges in biomedical image analysis:
* Data scarcity (few or no expert annotations available)
* Scalability (large, complex microscopy datasets)
* Generalization (robust models across modalities and conditions)
The PhD candidate will work on self-/semi-supervised learning, few/zero-shot frameworks, and the adaptation of foundation models to bioimage analysis. Applications include segmentation, classification, and detection of cellular and tissue structures.

What's required
Applicants must hold both a Bachelor’s and Master’s degree (or equivalent) qualifying for PhD studies in Computer Science, Mathematics, Telecommunication Engineering, Physics, Bioinformatics, or related fields. Candidates finishing their Master’s by March 31, 2026 are eligible but must provide proof before signing the contract. An average grade of at least 6.5/10 in the undergraduate transcript is required (slightly lower thresholds for some engineering degrees). Skills in scientific programming (Python, PyTorch/TensorFlow, computer vision libraries) and good command of English (spoken and written) are necessary. Motivation for interdisciplinary research at the interface of computer vision, deep learning, and biomedical imaging is expected. Additional merits include prior experience in AI or bioimage projects, open-source contributions, and international collaborations. Candidates must not already hold a PhD or have been employed under a Spanish predoctoral contract. Foreign candidates may apply from abroad and later obtain a residence/work permit for Spain.
