About this position

PhD fellowship in biomedical engineering and computational modelling at the University of Zaragoza. This CDTnet project (F10) focuses on developing digital twin technologies to monitor and evaluate outcomes of physiological pacing for bradycardia therapy. The position is based in the Biomedical Signal Interpretation and Computational Simulation (BSICoS) group at the Aragón Institute of Engineering Research (I3A), University of Zaragoza, Spain.

The research addresses an important clinical challenge in cardiac pacing. Conventional right ventricular pacing is widely used, while newer approaches such as left bundle branch area pacing (LBBAP) may better preserve the heart’s natural activation. The project will build patient-specific computational models from cardiac imaging, electrocardiographic signals, and electrophysiological data collected before and after pacemaker implantation. These models will be used to study electrical activation, mechanical function, and clinical outcomes, with the goal of improving patient selection, optimising pacing strategies, and supporting more personalised bradycardia management.

The project includes planned secondments to the University of Bordeaux (France), University of Oxford (United Kingdom), and Corify Care (Spain), offering training in pacing procedures, clinical decision-making, computational modelling, and advanced electrophysiological analysis.

This is a fully funded PhD fellowship under the EU Horizon Europe MSCA programme. Applicants should have a background in Engineering, Physics, Mathematics, or a related field. Experience in signal processing, mathematical modelling, simulation, Python/MATLAB/C programming, multimodal data, or machine learning will strengthen the application. English proficiency is required, and MSCA mobility rules apply.

Applicants should hold a BSc or MSc degree in Engineering, Physics, Mathematics, or a related discipline, and must be eligible to enrol in the PhD programme at the University of Zaragoza. Desirable skills include prior experience in signal processing, mathematical modelling, and computational simulation; programming in MATLAB, Python, or C; experience with multimodal data and/or data-driven modelling approaches including machine learning; familiarity with version control systems such as Git; strong communication skills in English; and the ability to work in an interdisciplinary and international research environment. MSCA eligibility also requires that the candidate has not lived or worked in Spain for more than 12 months in the 3 years before recruitment and has no prior doctoral degree. English language proficiency is required at an excellent level.
