About this position

The University of Melbourne is advertising a CIHR Research Fellow position in the Melbourne School of Public Health, within the Population Interventions Unit. The role sits at the intersection of epidemiology, economics, data science, tobacco control, and broader public health intervention modelling.

This is a full-time fixed-term research role for 2 years, with an anticipated commencement in late January 2027. The work focuses on global tobacco control research across five countries, including innovative SHINE health intervention modelling, cost-effectiveness analysis, health inequality analysis, and policy-relevant simulation modelling. The successful candidate will join a collaborative, internationally connected team and work closely with Professor Tony Blakely and colleagues.

Key responsibilities include conceptualising and specifying tobacco control and prevention interventions across country contexts, conducting literature reviews and data synthesis, curating external datasets, analysing survey and other data, generating model inputs, running Python models, checking outputs, and contributing to publications, grant applications, and stakeholder engagement.

Eligibility highlights: a PhD or near completion in epidemiology, economics, demography, or a closely related quantitative discipline; strong analytical and problem-solving skills; experience with independent and collaborative research; proficiency in at least one statistical/programming language, especially Python (with R and STATA also relevant); and confident use of Microsoft Excel. Interest or experience in tobacco control or other health risk factors such as diet or obesity is desirable.

Funding and benefits: salary is AUD 87,266 - 118,416 p.a. plus 17% superannuation, with additional benefits including salary packaging, health and wellbeing programs, discounted services, and professional development opportunities. Visa sponsorship is not available; applicants must have valid work rights for Australia.

Application window: applications close on 2026-10-14 at 11:55 PM Melbourne time. Applicants should submit a resume, cover letter, and responses to the Selection Criteria via the University of Melbourne application process.
