About this position

This PhD project at Aston University, based in the College of Engineering and Physical Sciences, investigates the use of Digital Twin technology to drive circular product design and lifecycle optimisation for electric vehicle batteries (EVBs). EVBs are central to the decarbonisation agenda, but their manufacturing and end-of-life (EoL) processes pose significant environmental challenges. Current EoL treatment is unsustainable, leading to resource scarcity and environmental harm, with recycling complicated by the diverse components of EVBs. Although repurposing for storage is emerging, most batteries still end up in landfills due to limited circular strategies and restrictive designs that hinder disassembly and recycling.

The research aims to develop a framework using Digital Twin (DT) to capture Circular Indicators (CIs) at the EoL of EVBs, informing circular design strategies for manufacturers and users. Existing DT applications focus mainly on battery management and storage, while the integration of CIs for redesign is still in its infancy. This project will advance the field by integrating DT and CIs to enable sustainable redesign and continuous circularity of EVBs, laying the foundation for future research and practical implementation.

Applicants should hold a First Class or 2.1 Bachelor's degree in a relevant subject, or a Bachelor's plus a Master's degree with Merit or higher. Equivalent international qualifications are accepted. Essential skills include good coding ability and basic IP networking knowledge. The application process requires submission of transcripts and certificates, a research statement, personal statement, CV, two academic references (at least one from your most recent university), evidence of English language proficiency, and a copy of your passport. International students must also demonstrate financial capability for visa, flights, and NHS surcharge.

The project is fully funded with a bursary covering home or international tuition fees. However, candidates are responsible for relocation and associated costs. The position is based on the Aston campus in Birmingham, UK, with regular in-person attendance required. Interviews will be conducted online via Microsoft Teams.
