About this position

The University of Antwerp invites applications for a fully funded PhD position in 4D tomographic image reconstruction within the Imec-Visionlab, Department of Physics. As part of the MSCA Doctoral Network project X-CELERATE, this research opportunity aims to advance novel imaging tools for studying advanced materials. The project focuses on developing efficient 4D reconstruction algorithms for X-ray imaging, specifically targeting dynamic micro–X-ray-CT where objects change over time. By integrating physics models, CAD information, and region-based prior knowledge, the research seeks to accurately estimate deformation parameters and enhance the quality of 4D CT images.

As a doctoral candidate, you will actively prepare a PhD thesis in this innovative field, disseminate your findings through publications in high-impact journals, and present your work at national and international conferences. The position offers opportunities for travel, training activities, and research secondments with MSCA partner institutions across Europe, fostering a multidisciplinary and international research environment.

Applicants must hold or expect to obtain a Master degree in Physics, Mathematics, Engineering, or related fields by the start date. Excellent academic results and proficiency in at least one programming language (such as python or c++) are required. Candidates must meet MSCA eligibility criteria, including mobility rules (not having resided or carried out main activity in Belgium for more than 12 months in the 36 months prior to recruitment). Strong English communication skills are essential.

The University of Antwerp offers a fully funded doctoral scholarship for up to four years, with monthly scholarship amounts calculated according to standard rates. Additional benefits include ecocheques, Internet-connectivity allowance, bicycle allowance or full reimbursement of public transport costs, access to a wide range of courses and educational credit through the Antwerp Doctoral School, and a world-class research environment with state-of-the-art X-ray instrumentation and computing infrastructure. The university is committed to diversity, inclusion, and equal opportunities, encouraging applicants from all backgrounds.

To apply, complete the online application form via the University of Antwerp’s job platform, attaching a motivation letter, detailed CV (including transcripts, honours, grades, publications), and contact information for two references. The selection committee will review applications and notify candidates of next steps. For questions about the application process, contact [email protected]; for job-specific inquiries, contact Prof. dr. Jan Sijbers at [email protected].
