About this position
KU Leuven is advertising a fully funded PhD position in the Additive Manufacturing team of the Department of Mechanical Engineering in Leuven, Belgium. The project is part of the Marie Skłodowska-Curie Doctoral Networks initiative TURBO-IMPACT and focuses on Laser Powder Bed Fusion (LPBF) of novel high temperature-resistant multi-metal combinations for small-scale turbomachinery.
The research topic is highly relevant to mechanical engineering, materials science, additive manufacturing, and computational modelling. The doctoral researcher (DC7) will investigate the relationship between material characteristics, LPBF process parameters, interface quality, porosity, surface properties, and final mechanical performance. Planned work includes 1D and 3D powder deposition strategies, development and validation of a multi-physical digital model, and study of local laser remelting and scanning strategies.
The position is hosted at KU Leuven and supervised by Prof. Brecht Van Hooreweder, director of Leuven.AM and head of the AM team. The project also includes possible secondments at DTU in Denmark and Amnovis in Belgium.
This is a doctoral candidate opening, not a postdoc or master’s scholarship. The appointment is for four years, full-time, with a competitive MSCA salary package, mobility and family allowances where applicable, full social security coverage, paid leave, and access to doctoral training through the KU Leuven Arenberg Doctoral School.
Eligibility highlights include a two-year master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, Computer Science, Data Science, Software Engineering, or a closely related field; strong English proficiency; no prior doctoral degree; and compliance with the MSCA mobility rule. Applicants should also have some background or strong interest in additive manufacturing and the mechanical behavior of materials, plus initiative, independence, teamwork, and regular reporting skills.
Applications must be submitted via the KU Leuven online application tool by 30 November 2026. Required documents include a CV, motivation letter, grade lists/transcripts for BSc and MSc, and optional supporting documents such as English test proof, reference letters, and a thesis/publication sample.
