About this position

Ghent University invites applications for a full-time doctoral fellowship in the Department of Solid State Sciences, embedded within the Conformal Coating of Nanomaterials (CoCooN) research group. The PhD project focuses on developing and exploiting novel experimental approaches to uncover the temperature dynamics of heterogeneous catalysts during thermo-catalytic CO2 conversion. This research is at the intersection of materials science, chemical engineering, chemistry, and physics, aiming to advance operando X-ray thermometry and laser-based methods for nanoscale heat transport analysis.

The scientific challenge centers on understanding how temperature affects catalyst performance, reaction kinetics, thermodynamics, and stability. Recent breakthroughs from the group, published in Nature Catalysis, have enabled direct monitoring of nanoscale catalyst temperatures, revealing significant impacts on local performance and stability. The doctoral student will build on these advances, developing next-generation operando X-ray thermometry tools and pioneering optical laser-based techniques to chart heat transport within catalysts.

Key tasks include synthesizing and fabricating metal nanoparticle catalysts using atomic layer deposition (ALD) and physical vapor deposition (PVD), converting CO2 into renewable products such as syngas, methane, and methanol. The student will participate in international synchrotron experiments (e.g., ESRF, SOLEIL), develop and exploit targeted thermometry methods, and conduct script-based data analysis of large datasets. Additional responsibilities include writing first-authored manuscripts for flagship journals, contributing to international conferences, supervising MSc students, and assisting in departmental teaching activities.

The CoCooN group offers a stimulating, collegial environment with state-of-the-art research facilities and strong industry contacts. The PhD topic is part of an FWO-funded project, providing a challenging platform for growth and expertise in thermal characterization of catalysts. The fellowship covers 100% of the net salary of an AAP member, is tax-free, and includes benefits such as training opportunities, 36 days of holiday leave, bicycle allowance, and eco vouchers.

Applicants must hold a Master degree in physics, chemical or physics engineering, chemistry, or a related discipline by the date of appointment. Students graduating this academic year are eligible. Excellent English proficiency, strong scientific reasoning, motivation for the research topic, independence, and responsibility are required. Proficiency in Matlab and Python is mandatory. Experience in heterogeneous catalysis, heat transport, ALD/PVD, synchrotron-based X-ray spectroscopy/diffraction, and simulation software (COMSOL/OpenFOAM) is appreciated.

To apply, submit your CV, motivation letter, diploma (if obtained), list of grades, and contact details of two references as a single PDF file to Prof. Matthias Filez ([email protected]) with the subject line 'Application FWO-Thermometry PhD'. Applications not matching the outlined format will not be considered. The position is open until filled, with a final deadline of August 31, 2026. For further information, contact Prof. Filez or visit the CoCooN group website.
