About this position
ETH Zurich is advertising a doctoral position in debris flow monitoring within the Engineering Geology Group led by Prof. Jordan Aaron at the Geological Institute. The project focuses on debris flow mechanisms, field monitoring, natural hazard risk management, and the analysis of a unique field dataset collected with sensors originally developed for mobile robotics.
The research will emphasize deriving velocity and flow depth estimates at unprecedented spatial and temporal resolution using point cloud and camera data. The doctoral researcher will develop a deep understanding of debris flow motion, perform hypothesis-driven analysis of in-situ measurements, conduct fieldwork to install and operate monitoring systems, and study sediment transfer at five study sites.
Eligibility: applicants should hold an MSc in Engineering Geology, Earth Sciences, Geological Engineering, Geotechnical Engineering, or a related field. Experience with or interest in point cloud analysis is an asset. Strong interest in debris flow mechanisms and/or a background in landslide hazard and risk assessment is preferred. The role also calls for motivation, creativity, independence, teamwork, and excellent English communication skills.
Funding: the position is fully funded for 4 years through an SNSF-funded project. ETH Zurich also highlights access to state-of-the-art laboratories and research equipment, plus training in teaching through teaching assistantships.
Location: Zurich, Switzerland.
Application: submit an online application with a brief cover letter, CV, transcripts, and contact details of two references. Applications must be submitted via the online portal only; email and postal applications will not be considered. Deadline: 2026-10-01.
