About this position

Doctoral Position in Debris Flow Monitoring at ETH Zurich (Engineering Geology Group, Geological Institute).

This PhD project focuses on understanding and managing debris flows, one of the most important natural hazards in mountainous regions. The research is supervised by Prof. Dr. Jordan Aaron and is based in a collaborative, multidisciplinary environment within ETH Zurich’s Department of Earth Sciences.

The project is SNSF funded and the doctoral position is fully funded for 4 years, with an expected start date in January 2027. The research will use a unique field dataset collected with sensors originally developed for mobile robotics applications. A major goal is to derive velocity and flow-depth estimates at unprecedented spatial and temporal resolution using point cloud and camera data.

The successful candidate will develop a deep understanding of debris-flow motion and apply hypothesis-driven analysis to in-situ debris-flow measurements. Fieldwork is an important part of the role and includes installing and operating monitoring systems, as well as investigating sediment transfer at five study sites. The project aims to generate new knowledge that improves both scientific understanding and practical risk management of debris flows.

Applicants should have an MSc in Engineering Geology, Earth Sciences, Geological Engineering, Geotechnical Engineering, or a related discipline. Experience with or interest in point cloud analysis is an advantage. The ideal candidate will show strong interest in debris-flow mechanisms and preferably have a background or strong interest in landslide hazard and risk assessment. The project also values motivation, creativity, independence, teamwork, and excellent English communication skills.
