About this position

ETH Zurich’s Laboratory for High Power Electronic Systems (HPE) in the Department of Information Technology and Electrical Engineering is offering a doctoral position on the development of solid-state transformers, with a specific focus on high-power medium-frequency transformers.

The project is part of research on solid-state transformers for future photovoltaic and energy storage systems. The doctoral researcher will work on modelling and optimisation of high-power solid-state transformers (SSTs), with emphasis on medium-frequency transformers (MFTs), including investigation of high-frequency and high-voltage MFTs for PV systems and medium-voltage grids.

Research topics include integration of battery storage systems and control of dynamic power flow between batteries and the grid, development of multiphysics models for losses, temperature, cooling, resonances, and electrical insulation, and optimisation of cores, windings, and cooling to improve efficiency, power density, and power transfer. The role also covers SST system development, power electronic converter optimisation, computationally efficient optimisation procedures, and the design, construction, and experimental validation of transformer prototypes and converter systems.

The laboratory conducts internationally leading research in power electronic converter systems for energy distribution, traction, electric vehicles, medical pulse modulators, and accelerator applications. The group also develops advanced multiphysics models, digital twins, and virtual prototypes at component and system level, making this a strong environment for candidates interested in research-driven design and experimentation.

Applicants should hold a diploma/M.Sc. in electrical engineering with excellent grades and have fundamental knowledge of power electronic converter systems. Strong communication skills, fluency in English, and the willingness to work as part of an international team are required. Interest in detailed modelling and design of magnetic components and in optimising power electronic systems is essential.
