About this position

EPFL is advertising a postdoctoral researcher position in data-driven X-ray nanoimaging for semiconductor metrology. The project sits at the intersection of physics, computer science, electrical engineering, materials science, and mathematics, with a strong focus on inverse problems, 3D reconstruction, tomography, laminography, coherent diffractive imaging, and machine learning for imaging.

The research goal is to develop acquisition and reconstruction methods that use known semiconductor design information to detect deeply buried defects from the smallest possible number of X-ray measurements. The postdoc will work on high-throughput imaging of static structural defects, starting from existing experimental datasets and extending reconstruction pipelines and data acquisition methods. There is also an opportunity to perform synchrotron experiments at the upgraded Swiss Light Source (SLS) at Paul Scherrer Institute (PSI) and other facilities worldwide.

The position is hosted by EPFL and physically based at the Swiss Light Source synchrotron in Villigen, Switzerland. The postdoc will be part of the SNSF Starting Grant project NEXUS-3D and will work closely with synchrotron scientists and computational X-ray imaging experts. The role offers an independent research direction, close mentorship, and professional development opportunities including summer schools, conferences, and synchrotron experiments.

Eligibility highlights: PhD in physics, engineering, computer science, or a related field; strong Python programming; GPU processing experience; experience with inverse problems and 3D reconstruction; excellent English communication skills. Helpful but not required: ptychography, sparse sensing, optimization, Bayesian experimental design, machine learning for imaging, synchrotron experience, and semiconductor metrology.

Funding: fully funded postdoctoral appointment for 2 years, with possible extension. Contracts are annual and renewable under EPFL procedures.

How to apply: submit the application only through the online platform with a single PDF containing a cover letter, CV, research statement, and contact details for 3 referees. Applications are reviewed on a rolling basis until the position is filled. If you also want to be considered for the companion time-resolved imaging postdoc, mention this in your cover letter.
