About this position

ETH Zurich’s Laboratory for High Power Electronic Systems (HPE) in the Department of Information Technology and Electrical Engineering is advertising a Doctoral Position focused on solid-state transformer development, especially high-power medium-frequency transformers (MFTs).

The project sits at the intersection of electrical engineering, power electronics, multiphysics modelling, and optimization. Research topics include modelling and optimisation of high-power solid-state transformers (SSTs), investigation of high-frequency/high-voltage MFTs for PV systems and medium-voltage grids, integration of battery storage, dynamic power-flow control, and development of models for losses, temperature, cooling, resonances, and electrical insulation.

You will also work on optimisation of core, windings, and cooling for improved efficiency, power density, and power transfer, as well as development and optimisation of SST systems and power electronic converters. The role includes integrating models into computationally efficient optimisation procedures and collaborating with another doctoral position, plus design, construction, and experimental validation of MFT prototypes and converter systems.

Eligibility highlights: a diploma/M.Sc. degree in electrical engineering with excellent grades, fundamental knowledge of power electronic converter systems, good communication skills, fluency in English, and a strong interest in detailed modelling and design of magnetic components and optimisation of power electronic systems.

Funding and conditions: full-time doctoral position with a competitive salary, excellent benefits, strong laboratory facilities, and encouragement to participate in international conferences.

Location: Zurich, Switzerland.

How to apply: submit your application online via ETH Zurich’s portal only. Prepare a CV, B.S. and M.Sc. transcripts, electronic copies of your thesis and/or publications if available, and names/addresses of references. Email applications are not accepted.
