About this position

Doctoral researcher in social sciences at LUT University in Lappeenranta, Finland.

This is a fully funded, four-year PhD opening in the Department of Social Sciences, linked to the GREENSHUFFLE project funded by the Research Council of Finland. The project examines the politics of the green transition, especially how unequal occupational recognition may shape political divisions in attitudes toward sustainability transitions.

The research is mixed-methods and includes conducting and analysing individual-level interviews in Finnish across nine municipalities in South Karelia, designing and analysing an original survey in Finland, contributing to scientific publications and policy briefs, presenting at conferences, and supporting project administration and outreach.

The doctoral dissertation is expected to be article-based and completed in English within four years. The role also includes teaching in bachelor’s and master’s programmes and working within the Social Sustainability and Welfare Policies research group.

Eligibility highlights: a master’s degree in social sciences (preferably political science, sociology, psychology, or a related field), strong commitment to doctoral completion, sufficient Finnish proficiency, and excellent English. Experience with interviews is a strong advantage; quantitative skills, academic writing, organisational ability, ethical research practice, and social media/website management are valued.

Funding: fully funded position with a starting salary of about EUR 3,100/month depending on experience and qualifications. The appointment starts as a one-year term and may be extended up to three more years based on progress.

Application deadline: 2026-10-04 at 23:59 Finnish local time. Apply via the recruitment portal and upload a motivation letter, CV, degree certificate, thesis or other significant research work, research proposal, proof of English proficiency, and two references.

Supervisor: Associate Professor Zhen Im. The post also mentions close collaboration with Assistant Professor Pauliina Patana at Georgetown University, USA.
