About this position
LUT University’s Department of Social Sciences is recruiting a fully funded doctoral researcher to join the GREENSHUFFLE project, funded by the Research Council of Finland. The project explores the politics of the green transition, focusing on the political consequences of unequal occupational recognition and how changing social valuations of occupations may shape political divisions in attitudes toward sustainability transitions.
The position is based at LUT University’s Lappeenranta campus in Finland and is part of the Social Sustainability and Welfare Policies research group. The successful candidate will conduct an article-based doctoral dissertation in English over four years, typically comprising three articles, while also contributing to project research and administration. Research tasks include interviews in Finnish in nine municipalities in South Karelia, co-designing and analysing an original survey fielded in Finland, writing scientific publications and policy briefs, and presenting findings at conferences and team meetings. Administrative duties include maintaining the project website, mailing lists, and social media channels, and helping organise outreach events. The role also includes teaching in bachelor’s and master’s programmes.
The post is closely connected to broader research on just transition, sustainability, society, political behaviour, and democratic attitudes. The department offers a collaborative environment and opportunities to engage with colleagues working on related themes, as well as opportunities to attend international conferences and summer schools. The position starts on 2 January 2027 and is initially offered for one year, including a six-month trial period, with the possibility of extension for up to three additional years depending on progress.
Eligibility highlights include a master’s degree in social sciences or a closely related discipline, strong Finnish language skills, excellent English, and a commitment to completing doctoral studies within the normative timeframe. Experience with interviews, quantitative methods, academic writing, and project communication is advantageous. The salary follows the Finnish university pay system for teaching and research staff, with a starting salary of about EUR 3,100 per month depending on experience and qualifications.
Applications must be submitted online by 4 October 2026 at 23:59 Finnish local time. Required documents include a motivation letter, CV, degree certificate, master’s thesis or other major research work, research proposal with literature review, research questions, methods, and timeline, proof of English proficiency, and contact details for two references. Only applications submitted through the recruitment system will be considered.
